2020-21 Auditions2020-21 Winners

Dear friend of great Utah singers,

Just weeks before all of our lives changed in March 2020, Saratoga Springs Utah native Jonah Hoskins was named a National Grand Finals Winner of the 2019-20 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Jonah entered the competition via the Utah District auditions in November 2019 and advanced through the Rocky Mountain Region in January and National Semi-Finals in February. His outstanding performances during the audition process brought his talent to the attention of opera professionals throughout the United States and landed him a spot in the Met’s Lindeman Young Artist Development Program.

While the MET stage may be closed this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the MONC Audition program is forging ahead with an altered plan to discover more promising young singers—like Jonah—and assist in the development of their careers. Due to the many issues that have arisen from social distancing requirements and varied government regulations throughout North America, all district and region rounds of the 2020-21 MONC Auditions will be conducted via video livestream.

The Utah District will host one of 31 district audition dates this fall which will accommodate more than 600 qualifying singers of the nearly 1200 who applied to participate. This means that we will provide the prize money for the day’s winners, will pay for the collaborative services of our official accompanist Dr. Carol Anderson, and will provide logistical support to keep day running smoothly. Now more than ever, young singers need financial support and guidance in their career development and the Utah District is proud to play a part in this year’s MONC auditions.

If your circumstances allow, we would appreciate your financial support toward the prizes that the winners of the Utah District audition date will be awarded to assist with their continued preparation and participation in the remainder of the competition. To contribute, please either submit your donation via the button to the right or email [email protected] to request a mail-in donation form.
While we will not be able to host a live audience for the Utah district competition, which will be held November 28, we will receive a video of the winners that we can share following the date. Additionally, latter portions of the national competition will be available to view via livestream. If you would like to make sure you receive information about watching those, please e-mail [email protected] with a request to be added to our electronic mailing list.

Our hope and current plan is to return to a live audition open to the public to observe in the fall of 2021. Until we are able to see you in Libby Gardner Hall where we can enjoy in person a day of great singing by Utah’s young opera talent, please stay safe and find ways to keep music in your life.
